His mother became mentally ill after his father had left them. Malcolm and his siblings were sent to foster homes. At the age of 15 Malcolm dropped out of school.
Growing up Malcolm was a shoeshine boy, soda jerk, bus boy, waiter, and a rail-road car waiter. He had led his life as a criminal. He was a gambler, sold drugs, hustled, and committed robbery. In 1946 Malcolm Little had gone to jail for burglary and stated that he "saw the light." While in jail he had gotten into a black muslim religious movement. The "Lost-Found Nation of Islam." After he had gotten out of jail in 1952, Malcolm had gone to the "spiritual leader" of this muslim religious movement, Elijah Muhammad. Which then he was given the name "Malcolm X"
